The Ocean and Us
World Oceans Day is an international event held annually in June to celebrate the ocean and inspire action worldwide to protect our shared ocean. As a leader in ocean research and innovation, the National Oceanography Centre recognises the role of the ocean in all our lives, the challenges we collectively face and the work that we must do to protect an ocean under increasing threat. To mark the day, we created a series of outputs which culminated in a short-animated video; The Ocean and Us. The animation is a journey through the ocean, introducing key facts and concepts through simple visual cues and text. The animation utilises a single colour design to create seamless transitions through the environment, maintaining the momentum throughout the short piece for use on our website, social media and to be displayed internally which is why there is no sound. The work was designed to be able to be easily divided into shorter messages, we continue to use them in new ways and plan to expand and evolve the video in the future.
