Big Science for Big Challenges

The National Oceanography Centre recognises the challenges facing the world today, the work we undertake as an organisation seeks to advance the knowledge required to address these big challenges facing people and planet. I designed a series of graphics to help communicate these three challenges to unify these topics visually across all of the communications on our website, social media, video, display and printed materials. The aim of the design was to simplify these complex problems into easily read and understood illustrated symbols which could work across all these outputs at both large and small scale. Whilst simplicity was the aim the final designs still visual interest through the layering of colours and shadow for their large scale application but are bold and simple enough for small scale, with the flexibility to reduce to three colours where required whilst maintaining their distinction.
